Feedback invited on proposed
Woden Cemetery extension
The ACT Public Cemeteries Authority is seeking community feedback on a proposal to extend Woden Cemetery to help cater for the burial needs of south Canberra. Current sales indicate that Woden Cemetery will be fully subscribed by 2018; however the proposed extension will extend the life of the cemetery by 15 to 20 years. This will ensure continued access to essential services in the south of Canberra until the Southern Memorial Park in Tuggeranong can be developed.
Overview of Woden Cemetery
Woden Cemetery was established in 1936 and plays an important role in our city’s history. The cemetery design features heritage registered art deco architecture, symmetrical layout and formal landscaping. Recent works include the establishment of a new babies’ memorial garden, installation of an information kiosk, and the mausoleum extension which is currently underway.
It is proposed that the adjacent land between the cemetery and the athletics park be utilised to create three hectares of additional space on the existing 11 hectare site. The extension will include lawn and granite monumental headstone areas similar to those currently available at the cemetery, along with a number of ashes memorial gardens. The new design retains the existing cemetery entrance and continues the radial layout that defines the current site.
The first stage of the proposed extension will be funded directly by the ACT Public Cemeteries Authority and will cost approximately $500,000. It is expected to be open to the public by 2017.
Have your say
Feedback is sought on issues such as the proposed location of the extension along with mitigation of any impacts that may result from the extension. Further information including the sketch plan and a feedback survey are available on www.timetotalk.act.gov.au Hard copy surveys are available at Woden Library and both the Woden and Gungahlin Cemetery offices. Letters have been sent to the residents of suburbs surrounding Woden Cemetery, and community councils and other user groups will be contacted for feedback. Feedback closes at 5 pm on Monday 8 June 2015.
Following the consultation period, detailed plans will be developed which take into account community feedback. These plans will be submitted to the ACT Planning and Land Authority as part of the Development Application process, when there will be further opportunity for public review and comment.
